Student turns wood into art

Lance O'Dowd woodworkingThese beautifully crafted twin Kokopelli vases were created by Lance O’Dowd, a Trinidad State Junior College Valley Campus college student. Wood varieties used to construct the vases include bloodwood, hard maple and walnut.

“After doing my first bowl, I wanted to do something bigger and more challenging,” said O’Dowd. Fine Woodworking instructor, Jim Relyea estimated that it took O’Dowd approximately 540 hours to build the pair.

When asked who the lucky recipient is, O’Dowd remarked, “I think my mom is laying claim to both of them!”

Left-over scraps from the vases allowed enough material for O’Dowd to construct the small bowl. For more information about the TSJC Fine Woodworking program, housed at Alamosa High School, please call Jim Relyea at 587-6013.
