Program Description

TSJC's Adult Education Program has had a major influence on the communities of Trinidad and Walsenburg since the mid 70's. Originally starting with GED classes in downtown Trinidad, the Program now has sites on the TSJC Campus as well as in Walsenburg. It has also expanded to include English as a Second Language and Family Literacy.

  • Basic Literacy and GED Program (Trinidad and Walsenburg)
Whether a person simply wants to improve their reading skills or they want to get a GED, TSJC's Adult Ed Program is here to serve them. Our Program is unique in that all of its instruction is done individually – basically a one-on-one format. And, best of all, our Program is free and we provide all the materials. After the appropriate amount of instruction, students are referred to the GED Testing Center on the TSJC campus.
  • ESL Program (Trinidad site, only)
Our English classes are designed for individuals who are non-native English speakers. Many residents in our community come from different countries and need to have a better understanding of our language in order to fully function in our community. Just like the ABE and GED programs, the ESL classes are individualized, but we also have some small group instruction, as well.
  • Family Literacy Program (Trinidad site, only)
Many students need to prepare for their GED or they need to learn English, but they have young children for whom they cannot find child care. So, two afternoons a week we offer on-site child care, so parents can work on their studies, while their children are playing and learning, too, under the supervision of trained child-care workers. In addition to preparing for the GED or learning English, the instructors also work with the parents to help show them ways that they can teach their children.

Registration and Enrollment

Enrollment Weeks for all classes occur three times a year – the first weeks of the summer, fall and spring sessions. However, we do have a Waiting List, if you are not able to be here during the Enrollment Weeks. Students just need to come to the Program site and get their name on the list. We will then schedule a specific registration dates for those students, usually on a monthly basis.

The Daniels Scholarship is available to all GED graduates, who enroll at TSJC as a full-time student. Recipients are required to be PELL and COF eligible, and must maintain a 2.0 average. The Scholarship pays whatever fees (tuition, supplies, books, etc.) are not covered by the PELL or any other scholarship received. For more information, contact Nancy Wilkinson at 719 846-5682.
